from the edges of the Wyperfeld National Park, in the north-west
of Victoria across to the mountain ranges of The Grampians, the
Wimmera is a diverse and flourishing region full of beauty and striking
Brilliant wildflowers carpet the hills in the spring, while the
vast open plains of the northern Wimmera, renowned for it's wheat
and wool production, are painted in a sea of yellow, as the canola
Major towns, such as Horsham, Ararat and Stawell, offer a special
mixture of historical sights and contemporary facilities, and are
the commercial centres of a dynamic agricultural sector. A network
of smaller country towns offer a relaxed country lifestyle, unique
to regional Australia.
There are fascinating windows back to pioneering Australia at the
Wheatlands Agricultural Museum in Warracknabeal and the Wimmera
Mallee Pioneer Museum in Jeparit. The 'Harrow by Night' sight and
sound show, has become a major tourist attraction offering an entertaining
presentation on the early life of Australia's oldest inland town.
From the rugged and ancient mountain ranges of the Grampians to
the fascinating Little Desert National Park, The Wimmera is a mecca
for sports lovers, adventure seekers and outdoor activities.
The Grampians National Park encompasses some of the most stunning
natural scenery in Victoria. Brilliant wildflowers unfold in spring,
while the rock shelters of the Grampians ranges contain some of
the most significant Aboriginal rock art in Australia.
The Little Desert National Park in the west, is a fascinating and
delicately balanced environment, with it's low woodlands of Desert
Banksia, it's spring display of colourful wildflowers and vast array
of birdlife, including the elusive Mallee Fowl. The park offers
a rich network of self guided walks and four-wheel drive tracks.
Mt Arapiles is internationally famous as a rock climbing venue with
over 2000 different climbs. A spectacular rocky outcrop, rising
sharply from the Wimmera plains, it forms part of the Mt. Arapiles-Tooan
The numerous lakes, streams and rivers in the Wimmera, provide some
of the best inland fishing in Australia and the region is popular
for it's other water based activities. The Horsham Golf Club, voted
PGA Course of the Year for the last three years, highlights many
of the outstanding sporting facilities in the region.
Under the grandeur of the Grampians lie some of Australia's most
historical and highly regarded vineyards. As the birthplace of Australia's
sparkling wine industry back in the 1860's, the area continues to
triumph with it's high quality table wines. A regional highlight
is the underground tunnels at Seppelt Great Western Winery. Known
as "the drives", these historic underground cellars continue
to this day to house thousands of bottles of wine.
The Wimmera is full of surprises. A unique and strikingly beautiful
region, waiting to be explored.
