Edenhope is situated on the shores of Lake Wallace, a haven for waterbirds, as is the surrounding district which is dotted with wetlands and lakes and graced with majestic red gums. The town is only 30km from the South Australian border on the Wimmera Highway. History William Wallace discovered Lake Wallace in 1842. In 1845 George and James Hope took up pastoral runs, making it one of Victoria's oldest grazing towns. Sheep and cattle industries have underpinned the local economy since then. Things to Do and See See the memorial to Australia's first cricket team to visit England, in 1868. It was an all Aboriginal team and was coached by T. W. Wills who is also famous for inventing Australian Rules Football. Walk or cycle the 5.5km nature track around Lake Wallace where the great crested grebe and other water birds may be seen. In the Black Swamp diagonally opposite the newly renovated Court House is a boardwalk and bird hide with interpretive information. Natural bushland harbours the endangered Red Tail Black Cockatoo at the renown 18 hole golf course. The Field Naturalists have established Flora Reserves directly behind the Golf course and down Reader's Road, off Harrow Road. A collection of local bird eggs and pressed wildflowers can be seen at Summerhayes Garden Centre. Other Points of Interest Situated 15mins away in Aspey, in the main street, is the largest Eucalyptus Ficifolia (flowering gum) in the world.
